Agnès Bompy Artist Bio:

The portrait of myself on the top of this page was made by Ernest Korsak (copyrights protected). I was born in the early sixties in Bordeaux, France, and have been working as a visual artist since 1986. I have always tried to bring a clear theme to my work. Admiration of the poetic connections in nature and engagement with the manner in which cultural coherence has given shape throughout the generations form the thread in my work. After a trip to Japan my interest in western symbols and visual culture was enriched by eastern interpretations of dynamics, geometry, physicality and motion. Frequent visits to Poland and a visit to Ladakh have widened the scale of usable experiences. In a number of my paintings different representative levels (symbols, allegory, photorealism, real photos, illustrations and geometrical forms) work together to form a compelling image. The meaning of these series may not be immediately evident but ambiguous and the viewer is invited to play rationality, poetic feelings and associative relationships against each other. The painting process and the paint surface play important roles in my work: the oil paint is applied layer by layer to fine linen that has been prepared by hand. The clarity and intensity of the colours are exploited to great extent and may not be clouded by inappropriate mixtures. The visible factors contribute to the dynamic character of the painted surface, where flatness, texture and depth alternate and complement each other. The individual works are placed in a variety of series, configurations that can enter in to new connections and contexts. They are the result (a distillation) of a continually developing preliminary work in the form of studies, drawings, photos films and collages.
