Alice Peillon Artist Bio:

Alice Peillon: Naturally abstract, by Nicola Doherty, Novelist To the uninitiated, looking at abstract art can be bewildering. The temptation is to search for meaning and representation without knowing if it is "˜supposed' to be there - whatever that may mean. What I find intriguing about Alice's art is the way it appears (to me at least) to tread a delicate line between abstraction and representation. It is possible to see her images as a harmonious balance of colour and shape, without reference to the world beyond the canvas. Fluid II might remind us of flowers in a vase, but it is also satisfying just as fluid circles and lines echoing each other and reaching an apex in the encounter between two rectangular solids. Look at these pictures another way, though, and natural shapes seem to emerge: sun, petals, waves, pebbles. A painting like "˜Plume II' could show the overlapping scales of a beautiful dinosaur: or are they feathers, as the title implies? "˜Lucent 9' suggests a sunset or moonrise: a pale orb in front of a shadowy pink mass, with swaying fronds - of plant or animal? - floating in the foreground. Even without the cue provided by its title, "˜Forecast' would conjure up the menace of a storm with its powerful flashes of cream, blue and black. Works like "˜Harsh Sound', and "˜Staccato', remind us that paintings don't have to represent visible things, but can echo other sensory experiences - or be an end in themselves. Sometimes it's just as rewarding to soak up a feast of colour and shape - like the blazing orange and warm rose of "˜Untitled'. -Nicola Doherty Alice Peillon is a Dublin born artist currently living and working in London. She graduated with an MA in Fine Art from Chelsea College of Art and Design in 2006. Recent exhibitions include: Constellation, Rua Red, Dublin; Candy Mountains, Arbeit, London BAT Pack II, Mile End Art Pavilion, London; Drawn Together, Jeannie Avent Gallery, London; A Night - There Lay the Days Between, 242 Gallery, London. At the centre of her work is a search for a balance between precision and randomness, and an attempt to find systems within the interaction of discordant pictorial elements. She often produces intensely worked surfaces that transform individual motifs into kaleidoscopic landscapes. www.alicepeillon.com
