Andre Martus Artist Bio:

DEEP INSIDE No other language but English expresses with more clarity and power a feeling of the greatest depth; a dark, unexplored depth, where the most guarded desires and fears of the human Psyche are buried. Using the translation "˜Tief im Inneren "˜ in German in the Dative only leaves the interpretation in the sense meaning the indirect object of the situational place. Where? While the other version in the Accusative "˜Tief ins Innere' meaning the indirect object of the directional place. Where to? Neither interpretation would be sufficient. And in Spanish you would have to say "˜Profundamente adentro' which also fails to express with total accuracy the concept upon which this project has been growing relentlessly throughout the year. All who want to succumb to the adventure of allowing themselves to become conscious of their "˜Inside' forcibly need an "˜Outside' , a cortex which encloses everything and from where to undertake the immersion. The best method of exploration is undoubtedly - Dialectic. Whoever wants to know the "˜Inside' starts their contemplation with the "˜Outside'. - in the shape of sheet metal, totally burned, overcooked, scored by multiple scars and wounds in the surface, I found nearly a year ago after a raging fire in my friend's terrace, the skin I needed. A skin that inspired me to reveal everything hidden beneath it. The skin was dead, destroyed. Deep beneath a pile of ashes and deprived of its original function, transformed it now seemed useless. I ended up with a skin hardened by Thanatos himself. Is it not precisely at this point, this image of unfathomable destruction, where Eros, the god of creation, sets out his path which causes a phoenix to rise again more gloriously from the devastated ruins? I saw with my eyes and felt between my fingers how shapes emerged from this raw material. Volumes that this skin wanted to describe beyond the limits of my will. Misshapen vessels arose, devoid of content that could be filled. -But what is enclosed under the skin? A handful of desires and fears perhaps, locked away in the deepest depths, beneath our skin, which characterizes each one of us in our human conditions? Our unspoken, unfulfilled desires, those that propel us, time and time again, to continue raising up one's head, to keep striving, to keep building, to keep living. The same desires that search incessantly to overcome fears, the opposite of desire, and yet equally unspoken and equally confined to the same interior darkness. Fear which hasten the unconditional service of Thanatos. This work was born out of this dance between the two antagonists hopelessly condemned to remain bonded , by the rhythm and cycle of the eternal transformation of material. Andre Martus
