Andrea Cukier Artist Bio:
Andrea Cukier was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1969 and moved to New York City in 1998. I am a painter who treasures the evocative capacity of the atmosphere and the light. I simultaneously create plein air and an abstract paintings. I work out of doors in the summer, directly from nature, never re-touching my works in the studio. In the cold days, I work on my abstract paintings. Most of my abstract work is somehow related to an inner landscape. Each piece evolves slowly from initial gestures of impulsive brush strokes. As they build upon each other, indefinite forms emerge, sometimes reminiscent of rusted metal structures, decaying industrial matter, or scars on the skin. These are mingled with and integrated within a complex and subtle atmosphere. I think of some of my paintings as imaginary ports that help me express the sense of loss I felt after emigrating. They are inspired by my memories of the port areas of Buenos Aires, where pollution, grime and reflections in murky water make me long for a clean, pristine light. In the last few months, as I painted my abstract landscapes, I started spending a lot of time looking out through my window (the skys shifting colors and moods have always fascinated me).Birds, smoke from boilers, rooftops and the barbed wire along them have become integral parts of my paintings. Nowadays, when I begin painting some of my abstract oils, my obsession with the atmosphere leads me to slowly transform them into paintings of skies: the ones that I see, the ones that I imagine and those that my brush strokes reveal to me.
