Andy Hill Artist Bio:

"I paint out of an urge to express otherwise inexpressible things and because I enjoy communicating these things using mark-making and colour. My paintings are arenas of metaphysical passions, spontaneously created through continuing and reoccurring motifs. My working method is akin to live performance and depends on knowing what's appropriate in the moment and responding accordingly. My son once described the process as a toddler when he explained how he managed to walk around in the dark, "I put one foot in front of the other and feel my way". Feeling the way is the secret and perhaps has something in common with zen, haiku and oriental calligraphy which I admire. I prefer casual yet dynamic paintings, and on canvas stretched horizontally on the floor, enjoy using paint which has some momentum of it's own, so when applied it doesn't just sit there but is already mobilised, seeking a way to its form, possibly as stains that spread and envelop or impastos that self-level and mingle. Understanding the medium enough to anticipate it's behaviour and utilise it's propensity is key to creating the pictures I want to see. It's a disciplined and synergistic process and one that's never left to chance. Qualities of perceived phenomena may be reminiscent in my work but today the focus is more on naturalness than a literal depiction of nature. Achieving particular balances of contrast is something I'm looking for all the time, between translucency and opacity, the thinly stained and extravagantly thick, an illusion of depth and modulation of surface texture, detail and emptiness. I'm interested in the effects of contre-jour light and imagine my paintings to be lit from within, with an open airiness which allows them to breathe. To be successful they must be surprising to me." http://www.andhill.co.uk http://www.andhill.co.uk/fb
