Ben Bell Artist Bio:

Inspiration – the paintings of De Kooning, Basquiat, Twombly and Guston. Contemporary painters Karl Bielik, Jane Lewis, and several painters I follow on the Saatchi art website. I hold with views of the abstract expressionists from the 1950s, that a painting should incorporate the emotional mood and perhaps the unconscious of the artist. With this, it can also take in the world around it, and I have begun to use words and imagery aside from the strict ‘purity’ of abstraction. I like the primitive gesture of abstraction; the instinctual motion of choosing a colour, deciding whether to mix it or put it straight on, what brush to use, whether to pour it and so on; the playfulness and simplicity of this. Harold Osborne in his book Abstraction and Artifice in Twentieth Century Art, connects the impulsive and quasi-automatic ‘performance’ of abstract painting to being expressive of feelings deeper and more universal than those which come easily to the surface of consciousness. Personal My personal view of the art world vis-á-vis the institution, is that it is a largely elitist, self-serving construct that serves little or no public interest. This may be a criticism of the public as much as of the art world. Get me! The Constructivists’ manifesto alluded to a kind of compromise, whereby art must fit with the society around it in a utilitarian way. I do not agree with this, due to its implied restriction on art, but at the same time it is impossible to ignore the incongruence between art and the society around it which is down to forms of communication that don’t gel which delays their love making. My frustration with this is alluded to in some of the text in my paintings, such as, ‘more obscure art for the masses please’, or ‘make a commentary on the world and do a nice picture at the same time!!’.
