Bruce Black Artist Bio:
Bruce Black (born August 15, 1970) is an American realist painter who is best known for his works in watercolor. His paintings chronicle the personal exploration of psyche and spirit and are an effort to translate more fully the diverse set of emotions and experiences of life. Black creates evocative images that are at once mysterious, challenging, and beautiful. Although he is comfortable painting in a wide variety of medias and styles, watercolor was Black's first love and he handles the medium with the fluency and confidence of a master. He states, "I remember visiting galleries in Scottsdale with my grandparents way back in the late seventies. They enjoyed watercolors and introduced me to a number of artists working at that time. That was when I started painting, and I have never stopped or wanted to do anything else." His work is realistic, but not photographic and makes use of quick washes of color along with more detailed and precise areas brought up through layers of glazing. He has participated in several group and solo exhibitions and received a Burdock Burn Grant in 2000 to complete a series of paintings focusing on the ideas of war and peace. His work is also in the collection of the Hallie Ford Museum as well Viterbo University and several private collections. He is collected both nationally and internationally. Black grew up in Phoenix Arizona and attended the University of Arizona for his BFA in illustration. Following undergraduate school he completed a Graduate degree (MFA) in painting at the University of Delaware. After graduate school, Black moved to Oregon where he quickly earned a position in the prestigious Blackfish Gallery in downtown Portland. He also became an Associate Professor of Art at Willamette University where he taught painting and drawing Until 2003. After the birth of his son, Liam, Black moved back to Phoenix to be near his family. He continues to live and work in Arizona with is his wife and son and enjoys painting both the urban and rural settings of his home state.
