Bruce Edelstein Artist Bio:

Bruce Edelstein (born Los Angeles, CA 1952 - works NY) reflects the unlikely and unpredictable layering of structures and forms that occur at urban sites within his current project. What is absent and what endures without forethought engages his imagination. For instance, preserved sections of historic buildings remain intact while new structures are added. He notes that roofs may be stacked and create an awkward beauty. Additionally, his recent work was influenced by a 2007 residency in Oaxaca, Mexico, a pre-Columbian center for the arts that endures as a contemporary cultural nexus. While there he collaborated with a weaver and a ceramicist to create a new body of work. Since that time, he has continued to work with clay, a shift away from his previous medium, wax. The vertical thrust of his sculptures, makes architectural references to urban forms. It is worth noting that he was in New York City on September 11, 2001 when the twin towers were destroyed. Bruce is conversant with the history of sculpture and carries this perspective to the studio. The texture of Giacometti, the elevation from the ground of Smith and the diverse elements in Brancusi wend their way into his oeuvre. As much as a classical approach seeks stability and order, Edelstein is drawn to the discordant encounters between elements that are "barely held together." Peter Moriarty
