Chantal Barlow Artist Bio:
My work is a visual and textural exploration of fluidity, incited by chemical reactions, extensive layering and movement. My pieces often take on the aesthetic of distant galaxies and exotic lands; untouchable locations that I make intimate and accessible by fossilizing the organic movement of liquid; paint, stain, water, and a myriad of UV protectant chemicals. Wood and aluminum, my current preferred mediums, house and hold the long-standing chemical interplay of the materials, which ultimately settle into their rightful resting place, taking on a final look of untouched, enchanting imagery. In this same lens, my portrait and interview series, Unconventional Apology Project (UnconventionalApology.com), explores the fluidity of identity and legacy through storytelling. My grandmother, Mableine Nelson Barlow, shot to death at 36 by my grandfather in 1975 in Compton, CA, sparked this artistic extension because her existence was nearly erased; few photos exist of her life. In 2013, I inherited my grandfather's camera and am using it to take 36 portraits of survivors of domestic violence or the family members of those who were unable to survive. The Project is in honor of my grandmother and all activities around it firmly honor her memory. It is crucial to maintain my paradigm of life being gray, fluid and ever-changing. My art explores my creative voice as profoundly fluid, taking an upstream path to my expression, building my creative stamina, dexterity and artistic audacity.
