Christine Sauerteig-Pilaar Artist Bio:
Christine Sauerteig-Pilaar has been a professional artist for over 20 years. The repeating themes of her work have most recently been of the wildlife surrounding her home in New Jersey. She attempts to bridge modern aesthetics with traditional painterly craft in her work. Photorealism is not the goal in her pieces, but rather the imperfectness of the human hand is left, the chance of letting the oil paint drip and collide on the canvas, letting happenstance dance on the surface. Receiving a BFA from Parsons School of Design, Christine has been stealthily working at perfecting her craft. From her early college angst ridden paintings that explored the beauty of the ugly, the struggle of the perverse, she has matured and found delicacy in the world. Taking time off for a small duration during the birth of her second child, she came back with a new outlook, with a desire to depict the relationship of nature with the human experience. The idea of the human imprint on the living creatures that share our everyday life with us, not necessarily just environmental. Also, the relationships that these creatures can develop around our existence. She is currently trying to connect with the crows in her neighborhood, with the hopes of having “Gifting Crows”. If she is successful, she plans on painting portraits of the gifts they leave for her, and then placing the paintings back where the crows leave the “presents” and recording what happens, if anything. The majority of her work is oil on canvas. In a real blending of talents, her supportive husband makes all the stretchers and most of the frames for her pieces. Within the last year she has begun working with gouache, and finding it very successful. She has been selected for several National Juried Shows, and participated in online Juried shows. Her newsletter is always highly anticipated with her followers, and everyone is urged to go to her website, check out her blog and sign up for the newsletterhttp://www.csauerteigpilaar.co.uk/ She has been commissioned for several pieces, and is on the verge of making a new series of paintings exploring the idea of the strong woman and delicacy. She is excited to see where this new journey will take her, and will push her talents in new directions. She has always loved to paint the figure, but has been struggling with the depiction of women, and nudity. Nudes are a strong passion for her, so she is currently working to find a balance that leaves the work meaningful and empowering to women. As a mother to two daughters, the protective mother instinct has swelled into her work, trying to be conscious of how women are represented in this image swamped society.
