Claus Bertermann Artist Bio:

“ - My art is like me: Gross motor-skilled, rough, unpolished, authentic, impatient and full of energy. - ” ENERGETIC, abstract, free, intuitive, colorful, positive, curious, accessible, unpretentious, spontaneous, multi-layered, focused, emotional, uncorrelated, rough, unpolished, authentic, gross motor-skilled ARTWORK. My paintings are my tribute to a great man and painter: Guillermo Castañeda (Spain, 1914 – 2003). Guillermo was my Spanish grandfather and my mentor. Since I was a little kid, he always performed a great influence on me with his art and his way of painting. After finishing my career as an Architect, it took me a while to get rid of my acquired habits of aligning and structuring everything and finally, when I started painting in 1999, I felt intellectually prepared to create abstract paintings, leaving apart any artistic, intellectual, or moral restrictions whatsoever. My biggest influencers are Gerhard Richter, Albert Oehlen and Georg Baselitz. Painting abstract symbolizes to me, obtaining the absolute creative freedom to work detached from any conventions. In my work, there are color-layered, multi-dimensional elements, arising from the fact that I confront colors and shapes to each other, mixing and dissolving them in a mutual interplay. Being myself a downright gross-motor-skilled man (…I really am...), I love rough, unpolished, authentic and spectacular gestures when working, without having to pay attention to small details. Small details always arise by themselves, when gaps and random color overlays arise from the grand gestures of an image. My paintings are XXL-sized because that's the only format where I can fully apply my gross-motor-skills when working. I love to work powerfully and you will always feel that energy in my art. When I paint, I specifically try to give away as much control as possible in order to create random serendipity. My control is limited to select the colors and to take the brush in my hand. The rest is done out of the movement, controlled by my inner self. Art is superb, always if and when it excites you - both while creating and when viewing it. My abstract paintings are my ambassadors who transfer you part of my energy. I hope you enjoy it!
