Danie Wood Artist Bio:
Danie Wood was born in London, England in 1965 and now lives on Vancouver Island, BC, Canada. A creative director by trade, she was schooled at York University where she received a BFA with Honours. Influenced by Turner, Rothko, Hitchens, Kiefer and Takao Tanabe. She is interested in investigating the human experience using landscape as a metaphor. "There is one painting that continues to resurface for me. "˜The Monk By the Sea', by Casper David Friedrich. It is a moment of reflection and wonderment. It presents vastness, beauty, awe, isolation and magnitude. It stirs the viewer to reflect. To have an inward perspective. The same is true of Turner - the vastness of his canvases and the action of the paint and light, make one feel within the landscape itself. Of late, I have been pondering the 'Current Landscape' ... the perspectives of society at this moment in time. In trying to resolve my own isolation I find my paintings try to dialogue between isolation and the sense of awe one has for nature. Lost, bleak overwhelming feelings become nullified by a feeling that something better lies beyond by the sureness of the horizon and the vastness of the sea and sky. A constance in nature that connects us all. I think Turner, Friedrich, Hitchens, Rothko and Carr all felt the landscape's power and beauty. That sense of feeling so small and insignificant which can stimulate our sense of connectedness."
