Diane Fairfield Artist Bio:
My passion is to express the beauty and truth that exist in the natural and spiritual realms. In doing this I am compelled by bold, vivid expressions of color, light, perspective and texture, never tiring of exploring them and often letting them guide the painting process. As an intuitive painter I enjoy experimenting with materials and tools and find that, to create the desired effects, spontaneity is critical. In the words of Master painter George Inness: "I had begun to see that elaborateness in detail, did not gain me meaning.... and produce the sense of spaces and distances and with them the subjective mystery of nature with which wherever I went I was filled. ... I gave way to my impulses and produced sentiments the best I could. . . " And so I use elements critical to my artistic vision - light, color, space, texture, perspective and new materials - to portray what George Inness talks about - the mystery with which I am filled - to speak in impressions to convey the sense of what I see in the natural and in the spirit. The interplay of light, color and shapes are my focus much more than details or traditional realism. My paintings center around two themes – nature and abstractions. In both, oils are often layered over acrylics, adding depth, dimensionality and different textural and tactile effects. We live in a world of great natural beauty that reveals the majesty of our Creator God, the greatest artist of all. Currently I live in an intoxicatingly beautiful “big sky” high desert environment in the southwest USA. It is an environment that inspires me to create contemporary expressionistic landscapes that speak of majesty and, again, the mystery with which I am filled. In much of my abstract work and some abstract landscapes, various materials are incorporated that interact with light - metallic elements that sparkle and films that split light into its spectral colors. Layers of acrylics are applied followed by oils with the light reflecting elements being embedded in the various layers. These materials and the luscious use of paints are a combination that offers both contrast and complement. Through these new techniques and materials a new dynamic experience is provided for the viewer. Over years, often a painting can become almost invisible on the wall. These new materials create change, surprise, and excitement to keep the experience vital and the painting fresh and alive. Colors and effects change depending on light and the viewer’s angle. In a very real sense, viewers interact with the painting as they look at it under different lights and from different positions. Born in New Jersey, USA and raised in New England, at the age of 5 I knew I wanted to be an artist. Although my life and career in human resources have taken me in many divergent directions I have always pursued art through both study and practice and now engage in it full time. My work is in private collections across the USA and overseas.
