Duncan Hopkins Artist Bio:
Artist Statement My paintings and drawings focus on representations of the rural landscape, and a figure's awareness (or lack) of surrounding space. There is the sense of an archaic landscape, a "˜primordial perception'. This is a sensory, visual experience which is also then known or interpreted through mental processes and frameworks of reference which could be political, environmental, philosophical, imaginal or aesthetic. The paintings attempt to portray these layered processes, and I try to fix ideas, images, memories, feelings and representations using a range of painterly methods and techniques. I am interested in the work of the philosophical phenomenologist Merleau-Ponty, who defines the lack of distinction between the object and subject, and writes about the influence of the invisible, or occluded, upon the visible. This is developed more recently in the work of David Abram, who considers how diverse forms of intelligence and consciousness between human and nature, can connect and communicate at times even though they can be very different. This is found in shamanic practices through time. I try to create authentic paintings which represent my own experiences and sensations, whether visual, symbolic or energetic. I may also make subtle visual references to various historical art works, and to "˜pop culture' such as sci-fi or album covers. I hope that a painting may resonate with the viewer in some way. I also have effective arts admin, design, exhibition, project management, and curatorial skills, developed particularly in the voluntary sector during 2012.
