Erik Hudson Artist Bio:

I was born in 1983 and was raised by my hippy mother in England. My childhood was far from normal but was the perfect environment for my artistic nature to develop. As a child i was surrounded by artists and musicians who encouraged and inspired me to be creative, this lead me to create and study art my whole life. People over the years have often said that my artwork is similar to Jean Michael Basquiat. Any similarities are only by coincidence and it has never been my intention to copy or imitate his work. I first heard about Basquiat when i was in my 2nd year of a BA sculpture degree at university. At that point i had already developed my own style and techniques but i was surprised to see that although our work is very different there are definitely similarities. The connections i made with Basquiat's work were not just in the context but in his approach and technique. I believe that all artists naturally fall into two specific ways of working that ultimately dictate their development and direction. As an artist you either have an idea and gather the materials to make what you are thinking about or you find the materials, play around with them and allow your ideas and concepts to develop from play. This is how i have always worked. i was an only child and spent many hours alone drawing and creating with whatever i could find around me. One definitive moment in my development came when i was walking past a large skip outside an old bank that was being demolished. Inside that skip i found many useful things including a large wire electrical cable. I took the cable home stripped it down and began to experiment. This was the first time i had used wire before so i had no idea what to do with it but eventually i would go on to create my first wire flowers and faces out of this cable. From that point on my artwork took a new direction and would never be the same again.
