Hae Eun Lee Artist Bio:

I express nonmaterial elements with colors, such as light and air. The reason why I chose this place as my residence is because I wanted to feel the atmosphere that surrounds space in the most non-urban like place. Something basic and primitive always gives me inspiration. Isn't a relationship between myself and earth an all-time topic that everybody thinks about intently? Nowadays that everything became so urbanized and machineries satisfy everything that we need, I believe that art needs to be a kind of tool that can satisfy what our mind needs. I promise myself over and over agin to paint and draw to live an affluent life. No matter how little money I have, I believe that painting improves and makes the quality of life more affluent. Rather, I realize that people feel weariness of life more often as machineries replace what used to of people's roles. Specially, there are more leisure life that requires brain these days. On the other hand, I think leisure life that requires heart is gradually fading away. I believe that human oriented ways of thinking can never be replaced by or be the same as of machineries. And this is the reason that I put the role of art in comfortability in human position. I had a habit of walk around nearly park in my village. everytime I went there , I could find something special feeling in the park. When I saw this place, I was motivated that it was possible to get inspired by nature and work at the same time here. When I see, think, feel, and paint right away in the workshop, I can minimize the time of blurring or spoiling the inspiration. Nonmaterial elements as light, wind, and air.... is just moment to moment inspirations.... something that I can never grasp. People capture moments in photographs. Yes, it works to some degree, but I can never be satisfied with the degree of captured moments in photographs. The moment gives us a sense of wistfulness of disappearing in instant, and grants us the change at the same time. A very memorable moment in the past linger around in our mind for long time, and even it changes on its own into some entirely different memory as the time passes by. Until now, I have been working with great interest in how such moments in the past affect our present time. With collage, painting, and pastel. Act of pasting came from a feeling of time falling down suddenly, and painting came from a meaning of how time is accumulated. Photographs capture the moment and encage it in, but I did not want to do the same in my paintings. I wanted to just capture the changes from moment to moment without exaggerating or distorting it. But capturing is just capturing in painting too as well as in the photographs. This is the limit of planar painting, but I think it is a more realistic method than the photograph. Moment disappears but the disappearance is something that cannot be simply explained because it is closely related with the reality. Some moment is changeable, an endless change, and it is continuously acting inside or outside humans. I was interested in such moment, and was deeply moved when I heard musics by a contemporary musician named Messiaen. Because I got the feeling that he was perfectly visualizing what we are hearing. And this is why I made this piece for viewers to hear from what they are seeing. On that account, I put drawing fixed objects from one fixed place behind, and started making pieces of moments from the past that I cannot see at this very moment but that are fixed inside my heart. Of that moment meeting some different moment in present time going in and out incessantly... The process of it all was completely an adventure and chall
