Joseph Laurro Artist Bio:
For me, being an artist is being a conduit- anything is possible and images are developed along with the re-contextualized and imaginary. My love for nature, animals and dance are never far from hand. In painting, I do not work from sketches, there is an intuitive response I find very challenging. It is visceral, as I react to the medium and what's happening with shapes, patterns, color, alongside images and feelings that come to mind. In the end, it's often surprising. Oil, enamel, flashe paint, ink, graphite & charcoal are among some of my materials. "Laurro believes dance and movement have been an integral part of his creative process, and what "keeps the energy moving." In 2007 he began traveling to Haiti, where he further developed his interests in community, culture and the creative process. Chosen for Curate NYC, Joseph's work was featured by Rachael Thomas, the Senior Curator/Head of Exhibitions of the Irish Museum of Modern Art (Dublin). His works have also been featured in Saatchi Art collections. Brooklyn Independent Media (BRIC) "On Air" interviewed Joseph as part of their artist series documenting local artists. His work is in several private collections, and has exhibited locally and nationally, including; The Mercer Gallery, Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art, Collette Blanchard Gallery, Greenpoint Gallery and Local Projects. Mr. Laurro enjoys working as a guest teaching-artist throughout NYC, and recently completed a mural for the scholars in the elementary school playground of Pioneer Academy PS-307, Corona Queens. Joseph received his BFA in painting from SUNY New Paltz, and studied painting/drawing and photography in Rochester, NY. He resides and works in Brooklyn, NY.
