Kathy Cantwell Artist Bio:

Kathy Cantwell has been painting since the age of 13. Her father realizing her interest in art supported her as she set up a studio in her bedroom. While in high school she also attended Moore School of Art in Philadelphia every Saturday during the school year. Here she first encountered classic studio art. She then went on to earn a BFA in painting from C.W. Post College in Greenvale, NY. Later, she studied painting with Carolee Schneeman at NYU Graduate School. She is credited with re-infusing Cantwell’s painting with new ways of thinking. After graduating from college, Cantwell lived in New York City from 1978-2001 working in the recording music business while painting at night. During this period she cultivated great supporters and collectors of her urban landscapes and off beat portrait paintings. In 2002, Cantwell left her day job to raise her family. This was a period of great change which resulted in a shift away from painting her surroundings and looking more inward for material to paint. Unsure of how she could affect change in her work she became drawn to printmaking looking for ways to transform her work. The process of thinking more abstractly took place. The idea of layering paint in different ways by changing her medium led Cantwell to find encaustic. Her current work has been included in juried group exhibits such as : Viewpoints 2015 juried by Jeffrey Wechsler, Senior Curator at the Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum, Rutgers University from 1978- 2012; Aljira, a Center for Contemporary Arts, Newark, NJ, Small Works at Mishkin Gallery, Baruch College, NY, NY, “Art Connections 11”; George Segal Gallery, Montclair State University in Montclair, NJ; Monmouth Museum 36th Annual Exhibition; “Big Art in Small Packages” in Lyncroft, NJ; and “Small Matters of Great Importance” juried by Kenise Barnes, Edward Hopper House, Nyack, NY. Kathy Cantwell currently lives and works in Maplewood, NJ.
