MARTINHO DIAS Artist Bio:

[email protected] http://www.martinhodias.eu Throughout the several years of his painting career, Martinho Dias has been an uncompromising researcher of truths, of some lies, as well a seeker of interior freedoms. Pursuing his own permanent transformation and evolution, this quest is made by keeping faithful and loyal essentially to himself and his personal beliefs. Martinho Dias's body of work moves and relates, most of all, to a political and social criticism, asserting his point of view regarding a certain contemporary reality. Frequently, he unfolds and re-configurates that same reality in the bidimensionality of his canvases. Collecting his initial material and themes mainly from press media, art history and internet, Martinho Dias is manipulator and disturber of images and contexts and circumstances, offering us with his paintings new realities and narratives or speechs, emphasized by colour, expression and figure and picture realism. Each single work starts based in pre-existing material taken from a mass of chaotic images, names and references, seething and bubbling away in the globalization melting-pot, following what the curator and art critic Nicolas Bourriaud considers the "culture of use". The photographic images serve as "models" for the pictorial compositions that are the substance of figures, faces and bodies represented in Martinho Dias's painting. The painter intends to amount the de-construction and de-contextualization of reality's several fringes as we understand it, taking parallel with Guy Debord's definition and notion of the "integrated spectacle". In an interview given to Mike Hauptvogel, Martinho Dias states that his working method "consists in removing from their comfortable sets several of today's leading public figures and protagonists, offering them in return, and as often as possible, some degree of discomfort." Dias also points that "the main theme is a social one, playing with society's different powers and fringes, mixed with a generous portion of irony and humor circling many paradoxes - whether they might be real or born out of invention. In this sense, each finished work presents itself as a result of the (re-)interpretation, re-organization and re-contextualization of the painting. Martinho Dias was a Visual Arts teacher and has illustrated several children's and young books. He has received painting awards and his work has been shown in several solo and group exhibitions in Portugal, Spain, France, England, Slovakia, Netherlands, Denmark, Austria, USA, Macao - R.P China, Colombia and Brazil. Some of his projects involved participation of public figures from different areas, but mainly musicians. He's represented in several public and private collections. http://www.martinhodias.eu
