Miguel Cabeza Artist Bio:

At first Miguel Cabeza's paintings show a tendency for geometrical order and urban design, but soon -and this is the most characteristic feature- the spaces become distorted and the pictorial gesture gain urgency and violence, constructing the picture in multiple areas with a wide diversity of plastic treatments. The result is a set of juxtaposed, conflicting and even contradictory spaces that become the main theme and are complicated even further by the insertion of numbers, letters and recurrent signs such as the cup, that classic symbol of fullness in Christian ideology that is also a holder of food and, in this case, an indicator of present time, a precarious Carpe Diem. Some architectural or human figures stand out in this complex framework. However the space remains indeterminate so as to play with basic concepts such as outside and inside without ultimately defining a recognisable place. As if wishing to indicate that living continues to be a problem in such a self- satisfied society. His painting is not a mere formal exercise, but gains much of its interest through the question of 'official' imagery and the world that promotes it. Miguel Cabeza prefers, for instance, images taken from pornography because they still conserve much of their transgressive capacity, because his ulterior motive is to record the superficiality of welfare society from the awareness of the joker's role the artist plays in it.
