Ramon Bofill Artist Bio:
American artist Ramon Bofill received his MFA from Rhode Island School of Design in 2005. His use of repurposed fabrics and traditional painting media result in hybrid surfaces that are a mixture of painting, tapestry and sculpture. In the process of intuitively and playfully re-contextualizing fine art and craft materials, Bofill explores issues of identity and cultural heritage, as well as broader themes of manual labor, art, aesthetics and social class. Born to Cuban-American parents, Bofill was raised in Miami, FL. His family history and his experiences working in the New York fashion industry, prompted Bofill to begin experimenting with textiles and fabric in 2004. Recent and upcoming exhibitions of his work include a solo show at Dimensions Variable, Miami, FL (2014); The All-Media Juried Biennial at Hollywood Art and Culture Center, Hollywood, FL (2013); The Cintas Fellowship Finalists Exhibition at MDC Museum of Art and Design, Miami, FL (2012); and a Summer Invitational at David Castillo Gallery, Miami, FL (2011). Bofill has also participated in numerous residencies, most recently completing a two-year residency at ArtCenter/South Florida in Miami. He attended a seven-month residency fellowship, one out of ten awarded in 2005, at the renowned Fine Arts Work Center in Cape Cod, where he was invited for a second term and as a guest juror. Other awards include a summer residency at West Dean College in the UK in 2004, a six-week residency at Vermont Studio Center in 1993, a RISD fellowship and the prestigious RISD Presidential Scholarship in 2003. Bofill currently lives and works in Norfolk, VA.
