Valentina Ferrarese Artist Bio:
Hi, my name is Valentina and I am an artist from Venice, Italy, living and working in Berlin, Germany since 2003. I have studied painting and art history at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice, curatorial practice at the University of Architecture in Venice and Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam. In 2008 I completed a Master Program of the Arts at the University of Berlin. I started with painting, drawing and sculpture, later experimenting quite succeffully with art in urban space and video installation and operating also both as artist and as curator. Since 2008 I went back to drawing focusing more and more on the developing of a new mixed technic that brings drawing and painting together, creating a unique effect, a richness of shadows and lights. This mixed technique includes charcoal, pastel, watercolor and pencil distributed in a multiple overlay. However, every work requires me to rethink my technique a little every time. I aim to reach a full effect of forms and patterns through the use of the color and also through the line. Parallely, I started to use oil painting. The two techniques influece each other, especially in the use of various level of color. The uniqueness of this process makes impossible for anyone to reproduce, copy or recreate the same effect. I do not work with assistants on my works. All of them are created only by my hand. This is the reason why they require a longer realization time. I have a special interest for portrait, interiors and nature, and animals, especially birds. Most of my work are created with a concept or a story and include quotes and hidden meanings. My atelier is always in my apartment. Life and art are not divided but interconnected. I wish to infuse my works with a very specific magical, silent, surreal atmosphere, that you can find in my atelier too. Compared to the realization speed that new technologies offer us nowadays, the drawing seems to us a very slow proceeding. It is a little like the difference between hand and computer writing: the time you give your hand to trace a line on paper corresponds to the time you give to your brain to elaborate thought and form. Drawing and painting are slow and complex thinking processes. Not only, while I draw and paint I develop a deep relation to my work, the paper records every small change in my psychological situation and also in my physical condition. The emotions or the stress manifest themselves in more or less firm lines, or more or less dark colors. I consider producing art as a form of meditation. It is a private moment to me and for this reason I work only in my apartment. The subjects of my works are photographed staged scenes, collages of photos, advertisement, portrays of friends, I also collaborate with photographers. The results are to be later transposed on paper. In the past years I worked projects and artists in residence programs among which one with the Atlantic Center for Arts, during which I could work together with the artist William Kentridge. I work as artist and curator with the Bevilacqua La Masa Foundation in Venice, where I also won the Prize for young artists; among other I also won the prize Il Sole 24 Ore Newspaper in Mainland. My works are part of the Bevilacqua La Masa Art Foundation Collection and the Video Collection of the MACRO Museum in Rome. Something to think about: many people can make a good video, but very few people can realize a good drawing.
