Ysabel LeMay Artist Bio:

The work of Austin, Texas-based visual artist Ysabel LeMay can be summed up simply: W.O.W. It stands for ‘Wonderful Other Worlds’, which she creates through the process of hypercollage. Her digitally composed panoramas of natural splendor, the real world remixed to paradisal perfection, are so vividly realized that one feels drawn to step into them. Since winning the KiptonART Rising Program in 2010, LeMay’s work has seen over 70 exhibitions around the globe and been acquired for the corporate collections of Chevron, Bloomingdale’s and Bacardi. In 2013, LeMay participated in the Texas Biennial and in 2015, she represents Texas at the fourth edition of Women to Watch in Washington, D.C. And not only is LeMay’s work flourishing, it is evolving — she has allied herself with the District 3 Innovation Center of Montreal’s Concordia University, to explore and build 3D augmented-reality and video installations of her work. Growing up in Quebec, Canada, LeMay fastened her connection to the natural world at her family’s cottage in the northern wilderness of the province. It was however in the jungle of the advertising world that LeMay honed the craft of visual expression. After 15 years in the industry, she sought a more rewarding path for her creativity, refocusing initially on painting and then photography. Traveling extensively, LeMay shoots plants, animals and the elements, constantly replenishing her visual catalog of the living world. While her technique is high-tech, LeMay’s hypercollage process is instinctual and organic, allowing each piece to dictate its own destiny. From a single, simple starting point — an image, a color, an emotion — she follows a meticulous process. First isolating and extracting elements of her photos, LeMay then weaves these together into intricate compositions of resplendent beauty. Now approaching new technological horizons, LeMay nonetheless seeks authenticity of experience over novelty. She speaks effusively of the artists whose own work has inspired, informed and enriched her life. With the moments in time and spaces in the imagination she creates, she strives to do the same for anyone who will venture into her Wonderful Other Worlds.
